First on Everest - Celebrating the World's Highest Mountain

Presented by CAN and Promise Nepal

Wednesday 17 November 2010 at the Royal Geographical Society, London

London will be the venue later this year for a rare gathering of elite climbers who have figured in the landmark ascents of Everest over the last 60 years. For all that Everest in the 21st century seems to have been rendered as the world's highest tourist destination - the biggest tick on the planet - the mountain has been the stage for some of climbings greatest dramas and a testing ground for human spirit and endurance. The pioneers who will tell their stories at the Royal Geographical Society have been its stars.

Special Guest Speakers include:

George Band and Mike Westmacott from the 1953 first ascent team

Tom Hornbein who made the first ascent of the West Ridge and traverse of Everest

Doug Scott and Tut Braithwaite who climbed the South West Face in 1975

Reinhold Messner and Peter Habeler who made the first asent without bottled oxygen in 1978

Rebecca Stephens the first British woman to climb Everest in 1993

Erhard Loretan who summited alpine style in only two days from the north in 1986
